Lunigiana, which is the internal part of the Province of Massa Carrara, takes its name from the Roman Luni colony founded in 177 B.C. at the mouth of the Magra river.
It is a territory with mountains and hills characterized by valleys among which the largest is the Magra one. Lunigiana is characterized by three mountain range: the Tuscan.-Emilian Apennines, the Apuan Alps and the first part of the Ligurian Mountains. Some of the towis councils of Lunigiana are in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park, others are in the Apuan Alps Park: these areas are suitable for challenging sports, but also for excursions for people who only like a contact with nature.

The unspoiled natural environment has helped to maintain the typical value of rural culture: traditions, wholesome products and the charm of enchanted places where the rhythm are dictated by the nature. Here there are unique landscapes: the grandeur of the Apuan Alps which reach the Tuscan Emilian Apennines ridges and create places of geological interests such as the imposing cliffs of Triassic gypsums from which the village of Sassalbo takes its name. The wealth of water generated by the Magra river and its affluence give rise to rushing and clear waterfalls as the waterfalls of Pracchiola and of Verde River in the Pontremoli area or give rises to deep canyons such as „Stretti? of Giaredo (Pontremoli) and the „Solco? of Equi Terme (Fivizzano).
Lunigiana has a large natural heritage: high grassland, moor of blueberry, pasture land. In Logarghena (Filattiera) and Camporaghena (Comano) precious meadow-grassland with small lakes, peat bogs and many orchilds have survived the neglect. The botanical gardens of Frignoli in the Fivizzano Town Council is an equipped centre for the preservation and diffusion of biodiversity, here there are some paths of great natural importance.
